![]() Unbreakable means they'll never run, no matter how many casualties they've taken or how badly they're losing. The game has a few rules that model "morale" bonuses, like Immune to Psychology and Stubborn, but instead of frenzy or any of those others, slayers just have Unbreakable. They wear no armor(though they're dwarves so anything lighter than chain mail is just "clothing") and are drawn to wherever the fighting is the ugliest in hopes of meeting something that can kill them and fulfill their oath. I don't object to the trope the same way you do, but what caught my attention is that dwarven slayers don't have it.įor context, slayers are dwarves that have transgressed or failed in some way and taken the slayer's oath to die in combat and thereby be absolved and regain their honor. Khorne warriors get it, certain types of orks get it, dark elf murder-witches get it, and so on. Thematically, it's your standard "go berserk" powerup. It gives models an extra attack and makes them fearless, but falls off if they lose a round of melee. In the Warhammer Fantasy Battles wargame, there's a rule called Frenzy. I enjoy the emotionless powerups that come with certain characters entering a state of extreme calm that lets them fight at a higher, more efficient level. Not really a rant but I just wanted to point this out. Gohan's initial rage vs Cell, for example, felt like it carried more weight than Vegeta's heavily monolouged rage when he sold his to Babidi or when he lost his shit against the Androids. It's just carries so much more weight when our heroes just get quiet and start taking care of business. Maybe I'm just biased but I really prefer a "calm rage" as it where instead of a loud, destructive hero. I feel like so many shonen authors just have a huge raging boner for making their heroes get stronger through anger, friendship or some such thing that makes their emotions fly off the handle and I just don't get why.
